How to use CutMute
The complete guide, from recording to publishing. CutMute is free, requires no sign-up and processes everything inside your browser — your files never leave your device.
1. Uploading or recording
- Upload: drag and drop into the center of the editor, or click to pick. Formats: video (MP4, MOV, WebM) and audio (MP3, WAV, OGG). Limit: 1GB per file. Above 250MB the app enters VOD mode (built for streamers): the audio is analyzed in a lightweight form, silence detection/review works the same, and the output is the EDL — Premiere/DaVinci cuts the original file with no re-render.
- Record audio: the RECORD NOW button uses the microphone, with a live visualizer.
- Record video: the RECORD VIDEO button opens the camera (flip front/back on phones). When you stop, the recording drops straight into the editor.
- YouTube/Drive links are not accepted — the file must be on your device (that's how we guarantee nothing is uploaded).
- Share from the gallery: with CutMute installed as an app ("Add to Home Screen"), it shows up in your phone's share sheet — pick a video in the gallery → Share → CutMute, and it opens straight in the editor.
- Drop anywhere in the window (not just the center area) or paste (Ctrl+V) a copied file.
- No account needed, no usage limits.
2. Cleaning the audio (Mixing Console)
- Presets: 🎙 Podcast, 🌆 Street (noisy background) and 🎧 Studio configure everything in one click.
- Studio Sound (on by default): levels the volume to broadcast standard (-0.5dB).
- Reduce Noise: cuts low rumble and high hiss, and lowers the volume of pauses where only background noise remains. Great for phone recordings.
- Kill Silence: cuts pauses longer than 500ms, with a sensitivity slider (-60 to -20dB).
- Click PROCESS. The stats show the time saved; use undo/redo to compare settings.
- Shortcuts: space = play/pause; ← → arrows jump 5s; drag the bottom timeline to scrub (kept sections show in green).
3. Cutting the video — right in the browser
- After processing with Kill Silence on, the Download silence-free video button rebuilds the video without the pauses (jump cut) inside the browser, with a progress bar. Works on phones.
- On first use the video engine (~32MB) is downloaded from the site itself; it's cached afterwards.
- On mobile the result opens the share sheet — send it straight to TikTok/Reels/WhatsApp.
- You can also download the treated audio as WAV or MP3.
- Cut-by-cut review: on the timeline, each kept section shows in green — click a section to remove it (turns red) and click again to restore. Audio and the video cut follow your review.
- Smart padding: the cut keeps ~120ms of breathing room around speech so word starts/ends aren't clipped.
- Cuts EDL: exports the silence-cut timeline (CMX 3600) to finish in Premiere/DaVinci/Final Cut.
4. AI analysis (optional and free)
- In the "AI with your own key" card, pick the provider: Gemini (free Google AI Studio key) or OpenAI (paid
sk-...key). You can also pick the model (e.g. fast Flash or Pro). - For Gemini: Get a free key opens Google AI Studio; copy the key (formats
AIza...orAQ...) and paste it into CutMute. The key stays in your browser only and goes straight to the provider. - Click Analyze Content. The AI returns 3 to 6 viral moments with exact timestamps, catchy titles, faithful translated subtitles, hashtags, a description suggestion and a copy-ready posting kit.
- Thumbnail options: at the end of the results, CutMute generates ready thumbnails — the viral moment's frame with the headline burned in YouTube style. Click to download the JPG.
- Ready clip: on each viral moment, the 💬 CC button downloads the segment with the caption burned into the video (yellow, TikTok style) — and the Burn caption: Yes/No toggle lets you export a clean clip too. All in the browser.
5. Video toolkit
- Vertical: converts to 9:16 (1080×1920) for Reels/Shorts/TikTok.
- 1.5× / 2×: speeds up video and audio together (no chipmunk voice).
- Fade: smooth in/out (video + audio).
- Cover: downloads the current frame as PNG — scrub to the good moment and click.
- Frames: extracts 1 photo per second (up to 60) at full resolution and downloads a ZIP with timestamped names (
frame_01-27.png) — great for finding the shot of that exact phrase. - Effects: B&W, Sepia, Vivid and Cinema — one click applies the color grade and exports.
6. Voice Studio (AI narration)
- Write the script (or use the AI's suggestion), pick the voice — Gemini (Kore, Puck, Charon...) or OpenAI (Nova, Onyx...) — and click Generate voice.
- Preview it, then Attach to video: perfect for narrating a silent video or dubbing over it. Or download just the narration audio.
7. Audiogram (audio → video)
Loaded an audio file (podcast, narration)? The Make video (audiogram) button turns the sound into a 9:16 MP4 with an animated waveform — ready for the feed.
8. Exports for professional editors
Subtitles (SRT)
A synchronized subtitle file translated to the language you chose on the site. Imports straight into CapCut, Premiere or YouTube Studio.
Timeline (EDL)
CMX 3600 standard with the AI's cuts already sequenced. In Premiere: File → Import. Also works in DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut.
Lossless cut (CMD script)
For a cut without re-rendering (untouched quality, a 1-hour video cut in ~2s): the CMD button downloads a script (.bat/.sh) that cuts the original file on your computer via FFmpeg, with fade and burned-caption modes.
Collab / Reaction (reaction video)
With a video loaded, the Collab panel builds reaction videos: add your recording, choose the layout — stacked 9:16, picture-in-picture or side by side — and generate the script that composes both videos on your PC via FFmpeg.
Live Reaction (desktop)
Want to react to a video that's open in your browser? On the editor's start screen, the Live Reaction button (desktop only) records the tab with the content + your camera at the same time, already composed: content large and you in the corner, react style. Step by step:
- Keep the video you'll react to open in another browser tab.
- Click Live Reaction → Start Reaction, pick that tab and tick "Share tab audio" (without it the content's sound won't be captured).
- Allow the camera and microphone. React away — the tab audio sits in the background and your voice up front.
- Click Finish (or the browser's "Stop sharing"): the recording drops straight into the editor to cut silence, caption with AI and export.
Everything 100% local: it's your screen being recorded, like OBS — CutMute never downloads video from any site.
FAQ
Do I need an account?
No. CutMute has no sign-up, no login and no paid plans.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. Processing runs in your browser and the AI uses your own key (Google's is free). If CutMute helps you, you can support the project via the ♥ button at the top.
Are my files safe?
Yes — they never leave your device. Only the AI analysis/voice sends the audio or the script text, directly from your browser to the provider you chose (Google or OpenAI), using your key. Details in the privacy policy.
Does it work on phones?
Yes — CutMute is built for phones: camera recording, in-browser cutting and captioning, and direct sharing to TikTok/Reels. You can also install it as an app (your browser offers "Add to Home Screen").
Browser cut or script: which one?
The in-browser cut is the fast path and works anywhere (it re-encodes the video). The CMD script is for untouched quality (no re-render) on a computer with FFmpeg.
